Before there was Vihara, there was the land and the water that quietly shaped our lives. Days moved to the gentle rhythm of the ponds, the tides, and the seasons. Fish and prawns were part of our everyday world, and naturally, they found their way into our kitchens, our meals, and our shared moments. This deep connection to land and water is what gives Vihara its soul as a heritage resort in Kochi.
This land was once home to prawn farms. Chemmeen ponds stretched across Maradu, alive through the night, tended with patience and care. Life flowed slowly then. Lunch was always at home. What the waters offered each day became the meal, cooked gently and shared freely. People arrived without invitation, and no one ever left empty-handed. Even when there was little, there was always something to give.
The land never belonged to one of us alone. It belonged to all of us who worked on it together. Whatever came from the water was shared among the families who stayed through the nights, the hands that cared for the ponds, and the community that grew around them. Giving was not an act of kindness. It was simply how we lived.
Hospitality, for us, was never a gesture. It was a way of being.
About 30 years ago, we began dreaming of creating a place here in Maradu that reflected this way of life. A place that would welcome people the way our home always had, with warmth, openness, and a sense of belonging rather than grandeur. Today, Vihara stands as the continuation of that dream, carrying the same spirit, quietly proud of its identity as a heritage resort in Kochi.
Vihara is not just a destination. It is our story, shaped by family, community, and a way of living carried forward with care. Open courtyards, water close by, light moving softly through the day. Nothing loud. Nothing hurried. Just space to breathe, to connect, and to stay a little longer. We are not recreating the past. We are gently carrying its warmth forward.
To carry forward the spirit of our prawn-farm heritage through simple hospitality, mindful spaces, and heartfelt service — welcoming each guest as we always have, with openness, care, and generosity.
To be a quiet sanctuary in Kochi where land, water, and memory come together, preserving the warmth of our past and offering every guest a true sense of belonging.
